Falling in love with Red

I love my teeth so I swore off red wine and drink coffee out of a straw. Ok, so that is a lame excuse and I don't drink coffee with a straw. I've just had terrible red wines that taste like dirt or ash tray or make my lips stick to my teeth. I suppose this is why I never understood why people make the long boring drive up to Napa Valley. I mean, wine is wine. Either it's red or it's white or it's good or bad. Right?!

It's not till you fall in love with wine that you realize it's not just wine. It's about the earth and the bees, the musty smell of the oak barrels, the sticky smell of grapes in the air during harvest season. It's about watching the sunset, strolling through the vineyard, eating grapes off the vines, getting your shoes all muddy and drinking wine till your teeth are stained purple. If it's about love then Regusci has swept me off my feet.

The winery is unpretentious and quiet. Here the wine is done the right way, in french oak without additives to change the flavors of the wine. A private tour took us upstairs to the owner's secret wine selection. There were rows of crates of dusty bottles, some dates worn away by time. If only I had a cork screw in my purse!

The wine thief, a contraption that looks like a bong (not that I know what a bong looks like) allowed us to taste the 2008 and 2007 wines not yet ready for the bottle. The flavors are already amazing. The Zin, and I am not a lover of Zin, is spicy and sweet at the same time. The Cabernet is smooth and had me wanting another glass of it's full bodied goodness. I wanted the wine to fill my veins!

Star your affair with Regusci. I think you will thank me.
